Podcast SEO

We’re not sure if you noticed but, if you go to Google and type in any keyword topic and then place the word “podcast” before or after it, Google will show you image results of podcasts related to that topic! Here, look below for an example.

Let’s say you wanted to find a new podcast for Christian Entrepreneurs. Look at how Google shows you the search results.

You can see it breaks down your search query by series then by keywords that are optimized in podcaster’s titles or show image. Sometimes, Google just shows search queries without images too! We’re actually the 5th result when you type in “Christian Business Podcast for Female Entrepreneurs”. Take a look below.

Yup, Niqueea, the CEO of The Marketing Prophet, has a Christian Business Podcast for Female Entrepreneurs called “Scriptures, Stories and, Strategies” where she transforms Biblical scriptures and stories into business strategies!

Google also started recognizing that searches were increasing for audio formats so naturally, they updated their algorithm within the last few years to actually rank and index podcast shows! Here’s example of a search result that yields audio formats.

Have a Landing Page for Your Podcast

In order for your Podcast to rank #1, or on the first page of Google, it’s best to have a place on the internet where your podcast lives. This does not mean the actual streaming podcast your show is on but, an actual website or landing page listeners can land on to learn more about your podcast, its guest, show notes and more.

Next, you’re going to need to find keywords to optimize your Podcast landing page and podcast episodes!

How to find quality ranking keywords for your Podcast

If you want your Podcast to rank on Google, you’ll need to create episodes your target listeners actually want to listen to…or search for. So, how do you find the best keywords to target for your podcast SEO and your podcast episodes? Use a Free SEO keyword tool!

I love to use Ubersuggest’s Keyword Tool to search potential keywords and the search volume of those keywords. Search volume lets you know how many people are searching for that topic within the last 30 days. You’ll also be able to see what websites are bringing in the most traffic based on the keywords you typed in.

Once you have your landing page set up, make sure you add keywords in these places to optimize your Podcast with SEO

  • Page Title
  • Meta Description
  • Url Slug
  • Within the web copy (don’t overstuff keywords or make it sound unnatural!)

It’s also important to add these keywords when speaking in your Podcast episode! Did you know that Google is able to decipher your audio and knows what topics and keywords you are covering?

So, when you mention a keyword within your podcast, your podcast episode is more likely to rank for that keyword or phrase especially, if you already optimized the podcast’s title, image, landing page, url slug and meta description.

Depending on what Podcast platform you choose to host your podcast episodes, where you place your Podcast title and description will vary. For the Scriptures, Stories and Strategies Podcast, we use Anchor. Here’s where you want to add your keywords.

Are You Ready To Optimize Your Podcast for Google Search?

Podcast SEO is no different than optimizing a a blog post. Remember, the biggest difference is the diction in your podcast. So, when you find those keywords, make sure you’re actually “speaking” them in your episode.
